Semi-Annual Civic Association Leadership Meeting
Golf Club of Dublin
May 2nd 2007
Agenda
- Community Activities
- Neighborhoods are encouraged to prepare a float for the annual Independance Day parade. The City will provide up to $250 to decorate the floats (which will be judged and prizes awarded). Contact Community Relations to sign up.
- Discussed the block party kit and using the City of Dublin web site which has a lot of information on upcoming events.
- Association Presidents were invited to attend the Memorial Tournament this year.
- Community Relations
- Tables are nearly sold out for the Independance Day celebration. There were only 10 left on 5/2.
- The City is adding a bike brigade to the parade this year (which starts at 11). Two wheel bikes only (training wheels ok) and the entrants will be judged.
- This year will mark the 20th anniversary of the Irish Festival (Aug 3rd-5th). A lot of the events can be registered for online.
- Spooktacular will be Thursday October 18th this year.
- Landscape Tips
- Tips for a great lawn
- Develop a Master Landscape Plan - How do you want to have your yard look long term
- How much time do you want to spend landscaping?
- Try to design multiple areas - think of your yard the same way as you do your house (different rooms have different functions)
- When adding plants, think about odd numbers
- Don't overload with too many plant varieties
- Don't use too much mulch (1.5 to 3 inches tops) and pick one that will degrade easily.
- Don't throw edging materials onto plant beds
- Keep easements and draining areas clear of plant materials
- Landscape guidelines and codes do exist for Dublin but they only apply to new developments
- Community Planning
- There will be a new Community Plan for Dublin this year.
- The last plan was ratified in 1997.
- Residents will be able to post comments online to all new development applications that are received by the city.
- Plannning is important since the City is growing rapidly with new housing and commercial developments.
- The Community Plan will help us answer questions like:
- What do we value?
- How do we protect what we value?
- The Plan will be updated every year as opposed to every five years (as done previously).
- Important Community Plan dates wil be posted to the City of Dublin web site and the plan will be delivered to City Council in July.
- Report from City Forester
- The Emerald Ash Bore is coming (apparently this is a bad thing).
- The insect is very destructive so the Ash trees in Dublin are being replaces by Oak and other varieties of trees.
- There are ~3,500 street Ash trees in Dublin.
- The insect works from the top of the tree down and it takes 3-5 years to kill the tree.
- More information available on the City web site.
- Ohio wildlife will help with wild animal problems. The City can't take care of these issues.
- The City uses dogs to chase the geese awat safely.
- Assorted Issues and Q&A
- Environmental sustainability and Health and Wellness will be big issues for Dublin addressed by City Council in the future.
- Wi_Fi has been deployed in the commercial areas but has not been deployed yet (City workers can use these services currently).
- Wi_MAX is being looked into for Dublin but the private partner needs to add the on-the-ground infrastructure.
- The shopping center on Sawmill near I-270 (Dublin Village) is a loss leader for the land owner and they are using it for a tax write off. They have no desire to see this land developed. City Council continues to try and address this.
- US 33 will be modified to accomidate the new hospital and there may be a one way exit from 33 straight into the hospital.
- Residents should refer to the web site if there are additional questions.
- Next meeting will be 3rd or 4th week of October.
