Neighborhood Vandalism and Criminal Activity

The following was reported on 5/8/008

One of the residents reported that gas was siphoned out of the tank of a car that was left overnight in their driveway.

I hope all is well. I live up the street and want you to be aware of some suspicious behavior that I believe to be drug dealing happening in front of my house and in the neighborhood. I have called the police twice in the last 3 days to report it along with the car license plate numbers of the buyers. I know I don't want this happening in front of my house or in our neighborhood and I am pretty sure no one in the neighborhood wants it either.

I want to let people know to be on the look out for this kid and potential deals. The police told me he has been in trouble before for drugs as well. He is actively doing this in broad daylight. I know others have witnessed it as well and also called police. I also got a call last night from a neighbor at the other end of the block who saw this kid with 2 different cars. He also called police with tag numbers.

Please spread the word. I just wish the police would knock on this kids door and be done with it but I don't think it is that easy.

Let me know if you have any questions for me but again, I just want to spread the word so the police can catch this kid and the teenagers who are buying from him.

After some discussions with the Dublin Police I sent the following note to the neighborhood on 8/23/07

Dear Lt. Hirschy,

Thank you for sending us this information (I am bcc'ing the association mailing list so everyone we have email addresses for will see your note).

One of the folks in the neighborhood also heard that an Officer Ruby has been assigned to this case. The information that person received is below:

"Here is the contact information for Officer Rudy. He said to call with any suspicious activity. The voice mail rings directly into his cell phone. He's going to start patrolling on bike behind our houses and have moved a drug dog into 2nd shift just in case.....

They are FULLY aware of the situation and are hoping we can help stop this.

If you leave a voice mail, you can just say "I'm calling regarding the Round Tower Lane situation". He'll know what you are calling about...."

We will certainly take you up on your offer to have an officer attend our next meeting and will call as that date approaches.

Thank you again for your efforts on this and sharing the information you have available. I speak for our whole neighborhood when I say that it is good to know that the Dublin police are actively working on this case.

Have a nice remainder of the week,

Tony

Tony,

Attached is police call for service information pertaining to Sheffield Meadows from 5-1-07 to present (see Excel spreadsheet CAD BY MAP REFERENCE.xls). My crime analyst cleaned up the narrative in order to provide a simple and general description of each event. The actual narratives can be quite lengthy and detailed so to make the information more digestible, I had him simplify the narrative. I included some of our police division's proactive crime prevention efforts (identified as 36C) in this report as well. For 36Cs, we attempt to make contact with a resident or property owner by telephone, in person, or by card left at the property. The most common 36C types are garage doors left open, valuables left in vehicles, etc. In some instances, we are unsuccessful in making contact with the property owner due to no one being home, not answering the telephone, etc., but in many instances we do successfully make contact with someone. The address information may be either the caller's address, location of an event, or closest address to the event. The start time and date is the date/ time of the call to the police or the date/time the officer called into our dispatch center. The information contained in our call for service records are public records that can be released upon request (410-4800 Records Division, Monday-Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM). I also had my crime analyst map the data for a general graphical representation (Sheffield.pdf). I hope this meets your expectations and gives you an idea of the activities occurring in the Sheffield Meadows area.

I have e-mailed the Detective-Sergeant (Sgt. Craig Hungler @ 410-4800) about the drug complaint calls and forwarded your contact information to the Detective-Sergeant. I also e-mailed the patrol officers assigned to your district to make them aware of the calls.

When you have your next civic association meeting, I would encourage you to contact us and we can have one of our district officers attend the meeting to discuss any issues and/or answer any questions.

If you would like further crime analysis information, please feel free to contact our crime analyst (Officer Chuck Collier @ 410-4800).

I hope this helps.

Tom

Hi Tony,

Just wondering if you've noticed that someone has vandalized the speed limit sign that is situated on Wynford, as you turn onto it from Avery? I know it's not a big deal, but it bugs me a little each time I see it. Is there someone in the city government that can be contacted about this?

I responded:

I will have a look at this since I was not aware that this had occured.

I certainly think we should contact someone from the City to look at this.

My wife contacted the City and they sent someone out to replace the sign the same day.

Wanted to let you all know I have a good friend over in Dunmere (across the bridge behind our house). She said to let our neighborhood know that they had golf clubs stolen out of their garage in broad daylight, last Friday evening around 4:30 or 5 pm.. Her neighbors saw it, her husband was in the house, but unaware, and she had run her son over to Karrer when it happened. She left her garage door open, as she was only going to be gone for 5 or 10 minutes, and when she came home the clubs were gone.

She reports that her next door neighbors saw, but didn’t think anything of it until she began asking people about it.

She said the car was a maroon or dark red Ford Focus, it was a young male adult who got out and walked into her garage. And in the car was a young woman and a baby in a carseat in the backseat of the car. No license plate, however……

Anyway, she said to let everyone know so it didn’t happen to others.

Today I found two landscape lights in my backyard. They were probably yanked out of another yard last night and dropped in mine. They are the inexpensive, plastic kind with little solar panels on the top. (One has a broken stem.) If you hear of anyone who is missing some, send them my way. (I'll probably pitch them after a week or two.)

The perpetrators also seem to have left a large pair of ripped, black dress socks close by, hanging on my fence. I doubt anyone will want these back. ;-)

Wanted to let you know that we had our concrete goose from our front stoop stolen last night (Thrus. Feb. 1st.). Are you aware of any other vandalism in the neighborhood recently?

Tony Trippe received the following email on this subject on 1/10/07

On Jan. 7th at 8pm our son's girlfriends car window was smashed and her purse was stolen. She was parked in front of our house. This past fall a friends car was broken into and he had things stolen. I am beginning to think we live in a bad neighborhood!

Tony Trippe sent the following to the neighborhood via email on 12/28/2006:

Hello Everyone,

Ordinarily I am happy to be writing you with City of Dublin news and to wish everyone good tidings.

Unfortunately, this time I am writing to inform all of you that we have some young vandals in our neighborhood and ask all of you to keep an eye out for a group of young men who have been wandering the neighborhood vandalizing holiday decoration and possibly stealing bicycles.

I have personally gotten two reports of this activity happening in Sheffield Meadows. Brief descriptions of them follow:

"The episode a week ago my son was sitting at our front room computer and saw 3 teenage (high-school looking) boys take a few of our front lawn decorations and walk away. I drove around the neighborhood and met up with the 3 boys on Maynooth, got out of my car and confronted them. They were 3 boys neither my son nor I had recognized. They were very belligerent and did admit to stealing, stating they threw it in my" #$@!ing" yard (never did find it) and that I was a "@#$!ing" you know what and it was their "@#$!ing" city and they will do what they want. Then they ran. Last night we saw someone pacing the walkway near the park benches while they talked on the cell phone as we pulled in our garage. It was too dark to see. By 10 p.m., they had hit our house again."

"In the past year, our property was damaged several times. I would like to share this information with our neighbors.

During October, our Halloween decorations was ruined on a saturday night and my son's bike was stolen. Also, pumpkin was thrown on the street.

During this holiday season, we had one pair of reindeer that were damaged twice. Last night they were completely broken (during 11:30pm-1:30am).

I would like to share with our neighbors that during the holiday season, please pay more attention to our community and your property.

Sheffield Meadows has a very good reputation, we have a safe and nice neighborhood. so I did not file a formal report to the police department, but we will have extra patrol for our community."

I have asked the second individual to contact the police and I would like to ask all of you to please do the same if you see any suspicious looking young people roaming the streets of the neighborhood after 9pm. If any new events occur please call the police and send me an email so I can keep track of the incidents that are taking place.

While understanding that this is the work of young, immature people I am troubled by it all the same because of the language that has been used and the obvious disrespect these individuals have for our neighborhood and the people who live in it. I would like the police to know if there is a reoccurring problem in the development so they will take it seriously.

Again, I am sorry to be writing but seeing that I have received two emails on this issue in the same number of days I thought the rest of the community would like to be made aware of a potential issue.

Thanks,

Tony
